A post-catastrophe world is divided into tribes, each with "Powerful Ones" who maintain peace through a mutual non-aggression pact. A northern tribe, the "Nation of the Herd," breaks this peace by conquering other tribes and taking children to train as "Fighters." These Fighters defeat several tribes, including the Sanbu Tribe and the Wild Tribe, capturing a boy named Garo and his mother, a Powerful One. Mo-Hun, a prince and warrior of the Nation of the Herd, leads Garo and the Fighters to the Island of the Beginning, where they encounter the Prime Tribe with a distinct culture. After stranding and hardship, they settle there, beginning to change. Meanwhile, the Nation of the Herd develops explosives, and Prince Kaitan arrives with an army to invade the island. The Prime Tribe's "Simbang" summon "Gwanegitto" to resist. Mo-Hun and the Fighters fight to protect the island and tribe from their homeland, as a battle between empire and colony, technology and spirit, unfolds.
