A boy named Russell earns a living by hunting whale-squids in the oceans near the land nation Liberistan. He encounters a mysterious being named Liv in the deep water. With Liv’s help, Russell gains enhanced control over a Yunboro and aims to build a secure future on land. Meanwhile, Sukaya, the daughter of a cabinet minister from the rival nation Augustonia, feels drained by unproductive efforts. Her circumstances shift when a humanoid robot named Ignite awakens and selects her as its pilot. As Russell pursues hope for the land and Sukaya seeks freedom, their stories unfold across the different regions visited by the massive ship Gargantia.
