Rintaro Waga is an elderly writer who no longer works and lives a solitary life, caring only for his cat. On a rainy day, he follows his cat to a shrine, falls into a pond, and begins to drown. As he faces death, he is rescued by Shiyo, a person he once considered his only friend, who had passed away forty years earlier.
