A prolonged conflict between humanity and Gamilon has left Earth's atmosphere severely damaged due to radioactive asteroid attacks. To address this crisis, Queen Starsha of Iscandar provides Earth with a device capable of eliminating the radiation. The space battleship Yamato, built from the remnants of a World War II-era vessel, is dispatched on a 148,000 light-year mission to retrieve the device. The crew must complete the round trip within one Earth year to prevent the extinction of the human race.
