In a version of Japan during the Meiji period, a young female emperor named Akiko holds power. A 14-year-old boy from a noble family, Misono Kimiyori, finds himself in financial trouble as his family's fortune declines. To address this, he enters the palace as a servant and encounters the empress for the first time.
