Marilla talks about Gilbert, how his looks remind her of his father, John, who had once been in love with Marilla. Marilla tells Anne how this situation was similar to Anne's and Gilbert's: after a quarrel, Marilla was unable to forgive John, and this broke the two lovers apart. John never came back.
