After the festival, members of the club resume practice and frankly evaluate each others' playing, but events from the festival and looming auditions influence performances, leading to tension between members. Individually they continue to prepare for auditions, contemplate romantic developments and discuss personal relationships amongst themselves. Later, the auditions are held, based solely on ability and with disregard for seniority, to accommodate the limited number of chairs available at an upcoming concours. The results of the auditions are announced by the music teacher reading out loud the names of those who passed during club assembly. Members who are selected acknowledge their inclusion while those who are not react with disappointment.
