A high school student named Ichigo Kurosaki can see spirits, but this ability rarely affects his daily life. His routine changes when he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami who rescues him and his family from a Hollow, a dangerous spirit that consumes human souls. During the battle, Rukia is injured and transfers her powers to Ichigo as a temporary measure to eliminate the threat. With Rukia incapacitated, Ichigo takes on the role of a substitute Shinigami, tasked with tracking and defeating the Hollows that threaten his town.
