In the year C.E. 71, a conflict rages between Naturals, represented by the Earth Alliance, and Coordinators, led by ZAFT. A ZAFT unit infiltrates the neutral colony Heliopolis to seize newly developed mobile suits. Kira Yamato, a civilian Coordinator student at a technical college there, discovers a mobile suit called Strike after most are taken. To protect himself and others, he is forced to pilot it. During the chaos, Kira encounters Athrun Zala, his childhood friend, who is now a ZAFT soldier involved in the operation. Kira joins the Earth Alliance aboard the ship Archangel, seeking to protect those around him while struggling with the reality of opposing his friend and his own people. A remastered version of the series, featuring updated animation and music, was broadcast starting December 23, 2011, with two recap episodes removed.
