Tooru Kokonoe attends the entrance ceremony at Kouryou Academy, where he must defeat his new friend Imari Nagakura to remain enrolled. He utilizes a dangerous special move linked to his irregular Blaze, resulting in Imari's defeat and drawing the interest of Julie Sigtuna. On his way to the first class, Tooru encounters his childhood friend Aoi Torasaki and their unusual homeroom teacher, Rito Tsukimi. Inside the classroom, Tooru discovers that his temporary duo partner and roommate is Julie, who has been watching him intently throughout the events.

Rumors regarding Tooru and Julie spread rapidly, leading the pair to befriend Tomoe and Miyabi during breakfast. Following a confusing lesson on basics, the class engaged in training where Tomoe caused further confusion. During sparring sessions, Julie’s exceptional skill left no volunteers except Tooru. As the week concluded, Tooru learned that Julie remained without a partner after Tomoe’s rejection. He pursued her, hearing the bells on her hairband, and found her on the clock tower balcony. There, they exchanged a Duo oath, officially becoming partners. This sequence highlights their growing connection amidst the challenges of their training environment and the social dynamics of their year group.

Tooru and Julie face Rito in the New Blade Battle while uncovering shared Avenger identities.

Following the announcement of the New Blade Battle, Tooru and Julie train with their Blazes. Tooru discovers an exhausted Miyabi collapsed on the track and carries her to her dorm, encouraging her to keep training. The battle begins at 5 o'clock, requiring duos to survive for two hours. Tooru and Julie defeat Tomoe and Miyabi, then encounter Tora and his partner injured on the floor. Rito appears, admitting she caused the injuries to eliminate students she deems unfit. During the ensuing fight, Tooru learns that breaking an enemy's Blaze damages their soul. He uses his Mjolnir punch to shatter Rito's Blaze, ending the conflict. The next morning, the recovering pair shares tea with Tomoe and Miyabi. That night, Tooru wakes from a nightmare about a past incident, and Julie reveals a scar on her back, showing she is also an Avenger like him.

Lilith Bristol travels to Japan to meet Tooru Kokonoe, believing he is special like her. Later, Tora and Tatsu thank Miyabi and Tomoe for their help after being injured. During class, Tooru reflects on Sakuya's words until Lilith appears and demands he join her as a Duo partner. Tooru declines, stating he already has a partner. Afterward, Tooru asks Julie out, and they visit a mall recommended by Miyabi. While Tooru buys clothes for Julie and they eat ice cream, Tomoe and Miyabi watch nearby. A group of boys harasses them, grabbing Miyabi's hand and angering Tomoe. Tooru intervenes to protect them, escalating the conflict. Lilith suddenly attacks the boys with her rifle, surprising Tooru, who realizes the weapon is an exception.

Following the New Blade Battle, Tooru and his companions reach level 2, resulting in a significant boost to their stats. Tooru is then compelled to leave school with Lilith to visit New Death Land, an amusement park. During this outing, Tooru once again refuses Lilith's proposal to become a Duo. He subsequently returns to his dormitory to meet with Julie. The next day, a distressed Lilith interrupts the second-year battles, defeating every participant. She then issues a challenge to the entire first-year class, demanding they participate in her Survive event.

During the boat journey to the training camp island, Julie rests on Tooru's lap due to feeling unwell. Tora and Tatsu announce that Rito wishes to see them, and Julie informs the group that they must swim from the boat to the island. Since Julie cannot swim, Tooru carries her through the water. Lilith appears, jumping from a helicopter to play with Tooru, but he explains there is no time, a point she accepts. Upon reaching the island, Tooru rests on the beach after the strenuous trip. As they proceed to the camp through the forest, they are attacked by unknown individuals and forced to fight back. Tooru is surprised to encounter Imari Nagakura, a lively individual he recognizes from his Kouryou Academy enrollment exam.

Tooru and friends search for Miyabi in facility ruins before being ordered to leave island

In the facility ruins, Tooru and his friends search for the missing Miyabi but are stopped by Rito, who informs them they must leave the island. Despite pleas from Tooru and Tomoe to remain, the rabbit teacher enforces the headmistress's orders, forcing the students aboard a ship. Two days later, Tooru notices a subtle change in Tomoe, though her discipline remains unchanged. Only Lilith observes Tomoe's upset reaction regarding Miyabi's disappearance in the shower room. In class, Tooru comments on Rito's instruction to keep the disappearance secret, which upsets his classmates. Meanwhile, Lilith cheers up Tooru and Tomoe, followed by Julie joining in the support.

Tooru questions K about Miyabi’s abilities after witnessing her defeat security guards effortlessly. K claims her strength is merely a gift combining Exceeds and Unit. Tomoe arrives to protect Miyabi but is shocked when Miyabi attacks her, revealing she has learned from Lilith regarding her previous brainwashing. Frustrated by K’s mockery, Tooru intends to strike K but instead faces Miyabi. During the Reign Conference, Equipment Smith boasts to Sakuya that Miyabi is his best creation, noting he watched her gain Tooru’s attention. Tomoe continues to confront the injured Miyabi, urging her to abandon her destructive power by stating Tooru does not wish to see her current state. This causes Miyabi to snap and attack again. Tomoe insists she will always be there for her. Meanwhile, K defeats the pair by injuring Julie, prompting Tooru to rescue them while suffering gunshot wounds from K’s squad.
