Demons are now a common threat in the kingdom of Midland, which is in turmoil. Guts, a swordsman marked by a demonic brand, remains unable to settle in one place. Alone, he could defend himself, but now he must also protect Casca, a former commander who no longer recognizes or trusts him. Perpetually on the move due to the ever-present danger of demons, they seek a safe location for Casca until a cure can be found. Puck, an elf, speaks of Elfhelm, a mythical land believed to be free from demonic influence.
