Re-Destro destroys Shigaraki’s hands, triggering memories of his past. As a child, Tenko Shimura lived under his father Kotaro’s strict rule to never mention heroes, who were blamed for harming families. Despite this, Tenko’s sister secretly gave him a photo of their grandmother, Nana Shimura. When Kotaro violently rejected the image, he later regretted abandoning Tenko to the foster system. Tenko’s Quirk then manifested, killing his family members one by one, including his mother who tried to comfort him. When Tenko begged for help, Kotaro attacked him instead. Enraged, Tenko used Decay to kill his father. Amidst the destruction, Tenko felt pleasure and realized he may have desired this outcome all along.
