New airforce recruit Huey astonishes everyone by outperforming top pilot Ilas. Ilas explains his unique ability to read minds by observing flight, a passion sparked by childhood fascination with aviation. He joined the military to document war in poetry. The archangel Raziel visits him, tasking him with creating a Phantom Book born from human despair for her library. Ilas continues fighting to gather material for his verses. However, Huey perceives a hidden truth and reads Ilas's own Phantom Book, which possesses the power to ground flying men. Ilas crashes and confronts Raziel and the Professor, who had previously posed as a bartender. They condemn his failure to complete the book. The Professor touches Ilas, ending his life and revealing he was merely resurrected. Ilas recalls Huey's assertion that he died in Paris with his loved one, then vanishes completely.
