While walking home from school, Jun saves a flying squirrel that is being chased by a group of crows. Because the animal was raised as a pet from infancy, it lacks the ability to fly and cannot locate food on its own. Feeling sympathy for the creature's helplessness, Jun chooses to take it in. He decides to keep the squirrel as a companion and gives it the name Donguri, which translates to Acorn, marking the beginning of their life together.
