Tomoko experiences depression because Miyabi no longer wishes to maintain their friendship. In an effort to alleviate her sadness and improve her self-esteem, Eikichi attempts to cheer her up. He achieves this by entering Tomoko into a beauty contest. This action is taken specifically to help Tomoko feel better about herself during this difficult period in her life.
