Hadashi no Gen 2

Three years after the Hiroshima bombing, Gen is now in the fourth grade. The city remains in ruins, and he collects scrap metal to help support his family. Some economic activity has resumed. Gen's mother becomes increasingly ill due to radiation sickness. He and Ryuta form a friendship with a group of orphans, including a girl with severe burn scars from the bombing, led by a stern older child. A depressed elderly man joins their circle as they create a support network and makeshift family. Despite this, life remains difficult, with many orphans dying alone, and the aftermath of the bombing is a constant, somber presence.
