On the return journey to Resembool for Edward’s automail repair, the Elric brothers purchase earrings for Winry to avoid anger over the damaged limb. Edward subsequently battles an assassin, resulting in further automail damage and another purchase of earrings to appease Winry. Winry reveals she pierced her ears after meeting Hawkeye on the day Edward became a state alchemist. Hawkeye tells Rebecca she grew her hair long after meeting Winry that same day. Rebecca notes the simplicity of this reason, prompting Hawkeye to state that reasons are always simple. She explains that they inhabit a simple world where pulling the trigger causes enemies to die.
