Shoyou Hinata, a young boy, becomes motivated by a player known as the Little Giant after watching a volleyball match. He attempts to form a school team, though his classmates prefer other sports. Three years later, Hinata plays his first junior high match against Tobio Kageyama, a nationally recognized setter called the King of the Court. Kageyama pushes his teammates excessively and dismisses Hinata as useless, attempting to block him repeatedly. Despite this, Hinata scores points using his speed and route changes. Kageyama wins the match 3-0, prompting Hinata to vow revenge against his rival.
