Keiichi Maebara relocates to the rural village of Hinamizawa, where he befriends Rena Ryuugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude and joins their after-school club. The peaceful atmosphere shifts when Keiichi learns from Tomitake about a past murder and a government-proposed dam project from five years earlier that was withdrawn following protests. Suspicion grows when Rena and Mion refuse to discuss incidents related to the project. Keiichi becomes further alarmed upon discovering a newspaper article detailing the dismemberment of the dam project manager, noting that one of the killers remains at large.
