Xin and Piao are slave sword training buddies who dream of becoming great generals. Piao is selected by a minister to serve as an aid in the palace, leaving Xin behind. A month later, Piao returns to Xin, who is near death, and delivers cryptic instructions alongside news of a coup d'état led by the King's younger brother. Following Piao's directions and a map, Xin flees to a shed where he discovers a second Piao. This sequence establishes the initial bond between the two characters and sets the stage for Xin's subsequent journey as he escapes the immediate danger surrounding the political turmoil in the palace.
