William T. Spears and Grell guide new grim reaper recruits through an exam required for admission to the dispatch association. The final challenge requires students to find a partner and complete specific tasks to earn their full status. As William observes the nervous candidates, he remembers his own rookie days when he partnered with Grell. They were tasked with evaluating novelist Thomas Wallace within one month to determine if he should die. After revealing their identities, Thomas mistakes them for actors and writes a romance novel featuring a grim reaper. The publication date coincides with his execution. Grell hesitates due to the book's potential success, but Thomas is killed by a carriage. William collects his soul, but Thomas’s resistance causes his cinematic record to flood into William. Grell intervenes to save him, and together they absorb the record, finally becoming full-fledged grim reapers.
