Writer Momosuke Yamaoka seeks shelter during a mountain storm and meets spiritualist Mataichi, who warns him to leave. Ignoring the advice, Momosuke stays at a rundown shop where he meets monk Enkai and Ogin. Enkai suffers from delusions of hearing red beans being washed. Shopkeeper Tokuemon recounts how his beloved apprentice Yasuke was murdered by clerk Tatsugoro, causing Yasuke’s soul to haunt the location as an Azukiarai. This story triggers Enkai’s breakdown. Mataichi, Ogin, and Nagamimi, who is disguised as Tokuemon, manipulate Enkai’s emotions. Enkai confesses to murdering Yasuke years prior due to jealousy over Tokuemon favoring the boy as heir. Enkai dies and is found in a nearby river, where Mataichi sends his soul to the next world. Momosuke later discovers the group are the Ongyou and is warned to stay away before they vanish.
