A 9-year-old boy named Marco lives in 19th-century Genoa with his father, a doctor at a hospital for the poor, after his mother Anna leaves for Argentina to escape financial hardship. When Anna stops writing, Marco becomes worried and decides to travel over 10,000 miles to find her. He embarks on a long journey across the Atlantic, through the Andes, and beyond, carrying only love, courage, and hope. Along the way, he experiences a difficult and transformative adventure.
