Consulate Townsend Harris and his Hollander personal secretary Heusken journey to Japan to finalize the Treaty of Peace and Commerce. Harris becomes obsessed with a grand plan to leave a historic impact on the Japanese people, a goal that leads to madness. During their trip in Edo, he creates insane pictures depicting his visions of both failure and success. These drawings include an image of Heusken smiling. As he works on these plans, blood flows down from his mouth, highlighting the disturbing nature of his mental state and the extreme measures he is willing to take to achieve his objectives in Japan.
