While buying mystery novels, Conan notices a gachapon capsule containing a note reading HELP from child Kazuo Mimura. He follows the pair to a hotel, enters their room, and hides Kazuo in a bathroom with no exits. To protect the boy, Conan swaps clothes with Kazuo due to their similar appearances, allowing him to take Kazuo's place in the kidnappers' van. Observing the suspects, Conan deduces that Hayato and Chiaki Wakai are a couple based on their wedding rings and notes stains on the front seat. He realizes they are amateurs following instructions from a notepad rather than planning the abduction themselves. The situation escalates when Hayato calls Kazuo's father, Masami Mimura, as directed by the written commands.
