Assistant Chiaki Minazuki is found strangled in a hotel, with author Keigo Hiura holding a perfect alibi. Despite this, Conan and Sera suspect Hiura is guilty and investigate the victim's room. They discover a 20 year old postcard in Minazuki's suitcase addressed to Hiura from Jun Ota, the heroine of Hiura's novel "The Phone, the Ocean, and I". A casual comment from Takagi eventually helps Conan and Sera realize how Hiura manipulated his alibi to commit the crime.
