While wandering in a forest, Natsume encounters demons wearing monkey masks who demand the Book of Friends. After Nyanko-Sensei rescues him, the demons capture Natsume again and take him to their territory. Nyanko-Sensei investigates the forest, and both eventually flee, accidentally being saved by exorcist Matoba. Avoiding confrontation, Natsume runs deeper into the woods and becomes lost, stumbling upon a house that belongs to the Matoba family. Both Natsume and Nyanko-Sensei are captured inside but manage to escape and reunite while navigating the confusing estate. The episode concludes with Matoba discovering Natsume and greeting him by name, revealing a past connection.
