In the 21st century, extraterrestrial beings coexist with humans on Earth. In a quiet town called Enohana, a financially struggling student named Chigasaki Mayuko shares a home with NieA, an alien from the "Under Seven" caste. NieA shows little regard for the impact of her behavior, contrasting with Mayuko's efforts to manage their difficult circumstances. As their unconventional living arrangement creates tension, the damaged alien spacecraft remains a looming presence in the background.
