While traveling toward the Violet City Gym, Ash encounters a wild Chikorita and engages it in battle. The encounter turns serious when Chikorita sustains injuries during the fight, prompting Ash to immediately carry the wounded Pokémon to the nearest Pokémon Center for medical attention. Upon arrival, they discover that Team Rocket has also targeted the creature with intentions to capture it for their own purposes. Ash successfully protects Chikorita from the villains' grasp. Following this incident, the wild Pokémon decides to join Ash’s team, becoming his newest companion as he continues his journey.
