Team Rocket consults the enigmatic Madame X to capture Pikachu, but her Malamar brainwashes them. Only Meowth escapes and alerts Ash and his friends. After Pikachu is also captured and brainwashed, Ash, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie, and Meowth attempt a rescue. However, everyone except Ash and Meowth succumbs to Madame X's influence, leaving the duo without a clear strategy to defeat her or save their captured companions from her control.
