Ep. 1: Kaoru visits a record store and clashes with Sentarou over musical styles.

Kaoru Nishimi relocates to his uncle's residence in Kyushu and begins studies at the local high school. He encounters Shigetora Maruo, Ritsuko Mukae, and Sentarou Kawabuchi among his classmates. After inquiring about purchasing records, Ritsuko invites Kaoru to her family's shop. Upon mentioning his piano skills, she leads him to the basement where Sentarou is present. Sentarou refuses to allow Kaoru to play classical music and instead showcases his vigorous jazz drumming. A disagreement ensues regarding the performance of a jazz piece on the piano. Kaoru subsequently departs the store after buying the recording of "Moanin'" by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
