The story opens with the murder of a St. Mihailov's Academy student over information regarding the Tsar Crowning icon. The following morning, Mafuyu Oribe and Tomo Yamanobe pray in the church before facing ridicule from rivals Miyuri Tsujidou and Hana Katsuragi, with assistance from Teresa Beria. Upon returning home, they encounter Alexander 'Sasha' Nikolaevich Hel, an infirm boy who intervenes when a Magnesium Qwaser named Pax Romania attacks Mafuyu by igniting paintings. This conflict serves as an introduction to Qwasers and their Maria partners, illustrating how soma enables elemental powers. Sasha proves to be stern and indifferent to student government or social norms, contrasting sharply with his nickname.
