A schoolgirl dies for Tsar Crowning data, leading Mafuyu and Tomo to meet Sasha who fights a Qwaser.

The story opens with the murder of a St. Mihailov's Academy student over information regarding the Tsar Crowning icon. The following morning, Mafuyu Oribe and Tomo Yamanobe pray in the church before facing ridicule from rivals Miyuri Tsujidou and Hana Katsuragi, with assistance from Teresa Beria. Upon returning home, they encounter Alexander 'Sasha' Nikolaevich Hel, an infirm boy who intervenes when a Magnesium Qwaser named Pax Romania attacks Mafuyu by igniting paintings. This conflict serves as an introduction to Qwasers and their Maria partners, illustrating how soma enables elemental powers. Sasha proves to be stern and indifferent to student government or social norms, contrasting sharply with his nickname.

While Tomo rests from fever, Mafuyu speaks with Ayana Minase before class begins. Priest Yuuri Noda delivers a soliloquy on the Tsar's Crowning. Sasha explains the icon and the Adepts' zeal to Mafuyu, who condemns all Qwasers as murderers. This remark triggers Sasha, whose unconscious state reveals his past refinement of iron-based powers. Mafuyu offers borscht as an apology. Teresa warns Mafuyu before leaving with Sasha. The situation shifts when Ayana reveals herself as the Magnesium Qwaser and abducts Tomo. Despite Tomo's soma energizing Ayana's powers, Sasha uses an iconoclastic strategy to defeat her, turning the tables on her rage.

Mafuyu struggles with Sasha while Ekaterina arrives in Japan to test Hana as a partner

Mafuyu finds Sasha’s recent actions trivial compared to Tomo’s encounter with the Magnesium Qwaser, yet she remains frustrated by his antisocial behavior and broken rules. After rushing to Tomo’s side during his nightmare about the Qwaser of Gold, she attempts to host him but faces repeated defiance. Meanwhile, Miyuri suffers another rejection and twisted persecution. Elsewhere, the Copper Qwaser Ekaterina Kurae completes her journey to Japan, violently repelling gunmen who demand her android guardian Anastasia. Upon arrival, Miyuri admires Ekaterina before they go shopping. This outing serves as a practical test for Ekaterina’s theory that Hana would make an excellent partner for Maria, marking the culmination of her travel objectives.

Ekaterina evaluates Hana's soma while Mafuyu takes Sasha shopping with Tomo and Teresa. Sasha carries heavy bags as punishment for breaking house rules. Tomo asks for a larger bra, leading to her and Teresa being abducted by voyeurs in the fitting room. Sasha and Mafuyu rescue them after defeating the attackers. Ekaterina then tests Hana's soma against Sasha, who is recharging. She easily matches his close-range attacks but stops when Mafuyu and Teresa intervene. After the girls handle the voyeurs and discuss Athos, Ekaterina settles into Hana's apartment to refine Hana as her Maria partner.
