Ren establishes a friendship with Yoh and Horohoro during their time together. Following Ren's departure, Yoh becomes the target of an assault by priests who are operating under the influence of Hao. The situation is resolved when Ryu intervenes to save Yoh from the attackers. Ryu is identified as a shaman in this encounter, and he is accompanied by his ally, Tokageroh, who assists in the defense against the hostile priests.
