Levi and his companions accept a risky surface mission that leads to their arrest by the Survey Corps.

Years prior, Levi and his partner Furlan Church operated as thieves in an Underground District, utilizing maneuver gear for heists to support one another. Their group expanded when they rescued Isabel Magnolia, a girl pursued by guards for attempting to return an injured bird to the surface. Later, a mysterious man from the surface coerced the trio into accepting a job that promised citizenship in exchange for a hostage situation. Although Levi, Furlan, and Isabel successfully evaded the military police during the mission, they were ultimately captured by the Survey Corps. The organization’s leader, Erwin, presented them with a deal: their criminal records would be cleared if they agreed to join the Survey Corps, marking a pivotal shift in their lives.

Levi and his squad attempt to assassinate Erwin during a Titan expedition but face tragic consequences.

Levi, Furlan, and Isabel join the Survey Corps under Flagen, who dislikes their criminal backgrounds. Levi recalls a request to kill Erwin and steal a document. After failing to find the item in Erwin's office, the trio plans an ambush during an expedition. Levi initially intends to act alone but is convinced to include Furlan and Isabel. During the mission, they help defeat Titans but are reprimanded by Erwin for wasting gas. Levi uses heavy rain to approach Erwin, only to return and find his squad, including Furlan and Isabel, killed by Titans. Discovering Erwin carried a fake document, Levi realizes his mission was pointless. Having learned to avoid regrets, he chooses to continue serving under Erwin in the Survey Corps.
