Wandering the countryside as a Taoist priest, Douzen crosses paths with a girl who was brought up by a yokai and knows nothing of human feeling or kindness. He calls her Shouzen, takes her on as his disciple, and lets her walk the roads at his side. What does it mean to be good, and what does it mean to love? Those questions shape the long apprenticeship through which Shouzen slowly learns to be human.
