Mar 1, 2024Dünste informs Denken and Frieren that Edel left the dungeon and mind control fails against replicas. Lawine and Kanne identify the enemy as a Spiegel with replicas lacking unique weaknesses. The group decides to defeat Frieren's replica first. Fern reveals Frieren's fatal weakness: she cannot detect mana while casting spells, a trait of beginner mages. Fern and Frieren are selected to fight the replica while others defend them. Frieren and her replica are evenly matched. Fern waits for an opening to use Zoltrakk. A flashback shows Frieren giving Serie a will from Flamme, which states Flamme convinced the human emperor to allow humans to adopt magic. Serie notes this begins the human era, where human mages may eventually surpass Elves like herself and Frieren. In the present, Fern hits the replica with a full-power Zoltrakk.

She criticizes Frieren for skewing results but acknowledges her own inability to fairly judge such a powerful mage. Serie conducts one-on-one interviews, failing candidates like Kanne, Laufen, Dünste, Ehre, and Scharf for weak wills, and Frieren for lacking combat magic interest. When questioned about defeating the demon king, Frieren credits her exceptional allies. Serie detects Fern's fluctuating mana, recognizes her potential, and offers her a place as a student. After Fern rejects the proposal, Serie ultimately passes her.
EP 28The Embarrassing Reunion and the End of the First-Class Exam Arc
Mar 22, 2024Serie interviews the remaining candidates, passing Denken, Methode, Wirbel, Land, and Übel by validating their resolve or militaristic traits. The examinees depart with mixed emotions regarding their results or the three-year wait for retakes. Fern and Stark meet Denken and Laufen at a bakery, where Denken shares memories of his late wife. Frieren converses with Wirbel, who cites the Hero Himmel’s example of helping strangers with mundane tasks. A flashback shows Himmel explaining to Eisen that he cannot ignore those in need, even if the acts do not save the world. Later, successful examinees receive privileges from Serie, who bans Frieren from mage associations for a thousand years. Lernen challenges Frieren to a duel to be remembered as her killer, but she refuses, noting Serie remembers all students. The party leaves Äußerst, where Lawine and Kanne bid farewell. Fern reveals she requested a laundry spell, annoying Serie. A final flashback shows Himmel avoiding tearful goodbyes to prevent future embarrassment, as the group continues toward Ende.
