Although Jonouchi survived Marik's initial assault, the lingering effects of the Game of Darkness severely weakened him. He collapsed and lost consciousness at the critical moment just before securing a win in the duel. Consequently, Marik was declared the winner by default due to Jonouchi's inability to continue playing. Yuugi is left devastated by this outcome, struggling to find any hope after witnessing the loss of his best friend's soul.
