The semifinal opening duel commences as Marik initiates a Game of Darkness. He employs dark energy strings to link himself and Jonouchi to every monster they summon. When a monster is destroyed or weakened, the owner suffers a proportional amount of damage. Although Marik anticipated severe consequences, Jonouchi is the only participant whose physical energy shows visible signs of strain, and even then, the effect is less intense than Marik had predicted.
