Scarlett boards a train returning to Poka Village with a newly purchased sheep and meets Joe, an attractive and wealthy American. Joe claims to have been born in the village and purchases a home on a hill where he intends to settle. Bernie, Scarlett's brother, had intended to marry Ginny, the village's most beautiful woman, and live in that house. Bernie resents Joe's presence and repeatedly challenges him.
