A being designed for human use begins to experience emotions—joy, sadness, and the sense of play. These feelings, it realizes, are a recent development in human history. If its presence causes any form of disruption or discomfort, it decides it should be confined to a wasteland, an island filled with discarded objects. It tells itself this must be the case and tries to suppress these emotions. Yet, there is hesitation.
