Two groups of followers, one in the Arctic and one in Louisiana, are connected not only by their rituals of blood sacrifice but by a common incantation: "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." This phrase translates to "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." Francis Thurston, a young man, becomes involved in an investigation into the Cthulhu cult, which leads him to a remote location in the Pacific. There, he encounters the terrifying reality of R'lyeh, the resurrected city of the dead.
