In 1953, Japan is still recovering from the war, and financial struggles remain common. Movie theaters become a popular form of escape for the public, with annual salaries for government officials being 12,820 yen, while a movie ticket costs 125 yen. Despite the expense, an estimated one billion people attend theaters yearly to experience cinema. Kudou Takeru, a new actor, and Kazama Shinichirou, a new director, enter the industry with a shared goal. They seek to transform the current, stylized state of cinema by embracing realism, a commitment rooted in a promise made during the war. Their aim is to infuse authenticity into the art form they both deeply value.
