In a futuristic setting, likely in Japan, robots are widely used, and androids are newly introduced. Guided by the Robot Ethics Committee, it is standard for people to regard androids as appliances. Though nearly human in appearance, androids can be identified by a ring above their heads. Some individuals, called "android-holics," have developed unnecessary empathy toward them, causing social concerns. Rikuo, a high school student, was raised to see androids as tools, not people. He notices unusual data in his household android, Sammy's, behavior logs. Investigating with his friend Masaki, they follow Sammy to a café with a unique rule: "Humans and Robots are to be treated the same."
