A dour, misanthropic man owns a used-goods store five years after the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate. One night, a demon named Koharu enters his home, having become separated from a group of wandering spirits. Koharu demands to stay without paying, and the man reluctantly agrees. Their arrangement leads them to become entangled in the affairs of various spirits. The story explores interactions between humans and spirits during the Meiji era, focusing on themes of empathy and kindness.
