In a future Japan, 500 years after a war known as "Eternity" ended due to a miracle, society is shaped by widespread Christianity and Vatican influence. People are categorized as either "deeply devout" or "not so devout." Ogito, known for being godless and for reading forbidden books, is assigned as an intern in the "department of saints" within the "miracle inspections" division. Shortly after beginning his assignment, he is sent on an inspection where the priest leading his three-person team is killed, leaving him with Izumi, a man who has surrendered his life to God, allowing his heart to reside within a puppet.
