Akira Kurusu is transferred to a new high school in Tokyo after being arrested for a crime. As part of his rehabilitation, he gains the ability to access his true self, known as a Persona. Alongside his new acquaintances, he uses a strange app called Momentos to confront and challenge corrupt figures. After an incident where he tries to help a woman in distress leads to his expulsion, he is placed under probation at Shujin Academy. On his first day, he meets Ryuji Sakamoto, and together they accidentally enter a castle in an alternate reality. There, they encounter Kamoshida, a teacher who rules the castle. Akira is captured but finds strength in resistance, unlocking his Persona's power.
