Barely keeping his own life together, the narrator learns that his mother has dementia, and the burden of caring for her falls on him alone even as she stops recognizing him. Her decline turns the days into an unending ordeal, and it is in the middle of that stretch that an anonymous message reaches him with a single offer: to make his mother disappear.
