Following Japan's defeat in the war, the country faced widespread ruin, with women particularly affected, many turning to low-paying work, prostitution, or marriage to American soldiers. Marina Lisa Komiya’s graphic novel centers on two Japanese women and the American G.I.s they marry during this difficult period. Haru and Yoriko, once close friends, are separated during an evacuation and take different paths to survive—Haru works as a waitress while Yoriko becomes a prostitute. Each eventually meets an American soldier who offers them a new life. Arthur, an American of Japanese descent, struggles with his divided sense of identity, while Scott is drawn to Japanese culture yet troubled by the damage his country caused. The story explores how love and relationships form in the aftermath of war, touching on themes of sexuality, personal identity, and cross-cultural bonds.
