The world is carved up among rival states, and constant war is simply the way of things. When a ruthless warlord wipes his small homeland off the map, a boy is dragged away in chains, yet refuses to accept defeat. He swears to free his people one day, and to do it he sets out on the near-impossible path of becoming a sage, a wielder of powers beyond ordinary human reach.
